WiTWA was proud to be represented by Board Member Janaki Gunawardhani at the 2026 Premier’s Science Awards, a milestone event marking the awards’ 25th anniversary. Over the past quarter-century, the awards have recognised more than 140 Western Australian scientists, students, educators and initiatives, celebrating the incredible impact of STEM across our state.
One of the highlights of the evening was the induction of two outstanding researchers into the WA Science Hall of Fame. Emeritus Professor David Groves from the University of Western Australia was honoured for his significant contributions to economic geology, mineral deposits, gold exploration and critical metals research. In his acceptance remarks, he reflected on the importance of hard work, mentoring the next generation, and his family’s long connection to teaching and science.
Fellow inductee Dr Mark Harvey from the WA Museum was recognised for his internationally respected research on spiders, pseudoscorpions, taxonomy and biodiversity conservation. His speech highlighted the vital ecological role of spiders and the growing urgency of biodiversity research as species face increasing environmental pressures.
The awards also showcased excellence across a range of categories, including Government Science Project of the Year, Science Engagement Initiative of the Year, and STEM Educator of the Year for both schools and tertiary education. The evening was a powerful reminder of the breadth of scientific talent and innovation being fostered throughout Western Australia.
A particularly inspiring message shared throughout the night was the call for everyone to become science ambassadors. Attendees were encouraged to champion and share Western Australia’s scientific achievements with their communities, helping to inspire future generations and raise awareness of the vital role STEM plays in shaping our future.
