About Dr Sharyn Hickey

Dr Sharyn Hickey is a spatial ecologist specialising in the use of remote sensing and GIS in shallow marine and coastal systems. Sharyn’s research has used remote sensing technologies and spatial analytics as tools for monitoring and detecting change in marine habitats, including mangroves, seagrass, and coral reefs.

Sharyn is interested in developing and testing emerging methods in remote sensing and GIS; using drones to model coral communities on reef flats, cloud processing to model seagrass, macroalgae and mangrove habitats, and developing methods for blue carbon assessments.

As an educator Sharyn supervisors students, and teaches programming and remote sensing. Sharyn combines concepts and real-world scenarios to ensure students are empowered to apply their knowledge and skills upon completion.
