Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the more frequent questions WITWA hears.
Don’t hesitate to Contact Us if you don’t see your question answered.

How much does it cost to join WITWA?

Nothing. We operate on a subscription basis. That means you pay to come to the events but incur no other costs. Our goal is to provide value for every member and charging an annual membership fee just doesn’t make sense to us. We’d love to have you Join Us.

How much do your events cost?

That depends on the venue and the function. Our goal is to provide entertaining topics and memorable networking opportunities. All of our speakers volunteer their time so we don’t have to recover speaking fees. We keep a close eye on other networking groups to ensure we offer good value to our subscribers.

If you don’t charge a membership fee, where do you get your funding?

We rely on corporate sponsorship, grants and member donations. If you would like to contribute, please click here. If you would like to become a corporate sponsor, please click here. If you would like to refer someone, please click here.

How do I find out about your next event?

We publish our events on our website and on our LinkedIn discussion group. We send an email invitation to each of our subscribers along with one reminder prior to the event. (Don’t worry; we won’t deluge you with emails.) We also tweet our events from our Twitter account (@WITWA).

What happens at a WITWA event?

It really depends on the event but our goal is to provide entertaining and informative speakers. We encourage open conversation and debate; in fact, we look forward to it. All of our events include plenty of networking time - both at the beginning and end of the session.

I have small children and can’t attend a breakfast meeting. Do you ever hold a luncheon?

More than anything, we can appreciate the challenges in organising work and family lives. As a result, we alternate our meetings between breakfast, lunch and cocktail hours in an effort to accommodate all schedules.

Can men attend your events?

We have at least two co-ed events every year that are wellattended by men. We welcome the participation of our male colleagues and encourage them to become subscribers. Male subscribers will only be invited to the co-ed events so you don’t need to worry about getting a lot of extraneous notices.

How many subscribers do you have?

We have about 450 subscribers on our database ranging across all industries and job descriptions.

I don’t have an ICT background; can I still come to a WITWA function?

Of course! Nearly everyone is touched by technology in their work. We welcome anyone who might benefit from knowing more people in the broader context of technology-related fields.

Where are you located?

We’re not actually located anywhere. We operate a virtual office and conduct our business through the WITWA website, over email communications and at our six annual events.

What is Go Girl, Go for IT?

It’s a career showcase we run over a two-day period to encourage young women to consider careers in technology. Go Girl, Go for IT is a national program run in the Eastern states by their own Women are I.T. chapters.

What is the TechTrail?

The TechTrail is a new project by WITWA to address two issues:

  • The lack of youth choosing technology careers
  • The lack of career programs for children in remote and “at risk” areas of Western Australia

TechTrail is a project we’re conducting, in conjunction with SciTech, to encourage highschool age girls and boys to consider technology careers and tertiary training for technology professions. TechTrail is a Western Australia initiative.
