About Us

The idea behind Women are I.T. (WIT) was conceived in Melbourne in 1998 by Madeline Sanders and Jenny Barbour. A year later, Loula Papandreou and Yvonne Parle formed the Western Australian Chapter in 1999. Since then, Women are I.T., WA (WITWA) has incorporated. We now have 6 committee members and over 450 subscribers, both women and men. In 2010 we officially changed our name to Women in Technology, WA.

Our Agenda

WITWA is interested in promoting technology careers to youth and, specifically, to girls. As fewer students are selecting technology for their tertiary studies, we feel it is vital to educate and support young people about the opportunities available to them. It’s not easy. Tech-savvy youth no longer consider technology as a career option. Therefore, we run a careers showcase called Go Girl, Go for IT. Recently, WITWA adopted an initiative to reach children in rural and “at risk” communities of WA. techtrails will be conducted throughout Western Australia and operate as an educational incursion for high school students, both girls and boys.

Our Mission

  • To create and sustain a community for women engaged in the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Industries
  • To promote and encourage the entry and retention of women in roles within ICT Industries
  • To educate women in the ICT Industries
  • To support women working in the ICT Industries and Sciences through mentoring and coaching
  • To foster women’s input into the ICT Industries and Sciences

How do we achieve this?

We conduct several networking events per year, alternating female only and co-ed events. Because we understand women often juggle multiple schedules, we operate a rotating calendar. Our goal is to have 2 Breakfast events, 2 Lunch events, and 2 Evening events in the course of the year providing flexibility not often seen in networking functions.

We receive extremely positive feedback on our programs, due largely to the high calibre guest speakers  who volunteer their expertise to WITWA. We allow plenty of time to get to know the other attendees and encourage a true networking situation where everyone comes away with new contacts.
